History of the Forestry Study Program
The Study Program Management Unit interest or concentration in forestry was initially named the Forestry Division at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS). The Forestry Division was founded on August 18, 1963, and was one of the two existing divisions in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at that time. In the first decade since its establishment, it became the Department of Forestry which experienced difficult times and had time to not accept new students in 1969, 1970, and 1971 academic years due to the lack of permanent teaching staff. During this period, the Forestry Department could only produce bachelor’s graduates. To produce forestry graduates to meet the need for permanent teaching staff, UNHAS is affiliated with universities in Java, namely the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM). In 1980, the Department of Forestry completed its undergraduate forestry program.
Based on the Director General of Higher Education No. 108/DIKTI/Kep./1984, in 1984, the Department of Forestry had two study programs (SP), namely the Forest Management and Cultivation and the Forest Products Technology Study Program. In 1996, SP Management and Forest Cultivation changed its name to SP Forest Management based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 234/DIKTI/Kep./1996.
Based on the Approval Letter of the Director General of Higher Education No. 4783/D/T/2006, in 2007, the Faculty of Forestry was established with one department consisting of two study programs as a result of the separation from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Since the issuance of the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education No. 163/DIKTI/Kep/2007 concerning Arrangement and Codification of Study Programs At universities, the Department of Forestry only has one study program, namely Forestry Study Program which is a merger of two existing study programs, namely Forest Management Study Program and Forest Product Technology Study Program.
Following up on the merged two study programs, in 2008, the Faculty of Forestry held a curriculum workshop and formulated the Forestry Study Program vision and mission. The vision and mission formulation of the Forestry Study Program, which is a combination of the two previous study programs’ vision and mission, is the result of discussions involving lecturers, students, and stakeholders by considering the issues in the forestry and environmental fields at present and their development in the future. Moreover, it remain refers to the Hasanuddin University vision.
