Unhas Forestry Study Program and RECOFTC Indonesia Joint Discussion to Discuss the Independent MBKM Program in Collaboration with the Lacuna Project

Tamalanrea-Makassar. The Forestry Study Program (Prodi) of the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University (Unhas) held a meeting with RECOFTC Indonesia in the context of a joint discussion to discuss the implementation of the Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) program which will collaborate with the Lacuna project. The activity took place starting at 10.00 WITA virtually via zoom meeting and in the Senate Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Faculty of Forestry, Unhas Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, Wednesday (8/1/2025).

Before starting activities, always convey and emphasize and always provide direction regarding the commitment to reject gratification, be free from Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism (KKN) as one of the steps in building an integrity zone towards WBK and WBBM.

Prof. Dr. Ir. A. Mujetahid M., S.Hut., M.P. In his speech, he expressed his thanks to RECOFTC Indonesia for their presence in this activity to discuss the implementation of the MBKM Mandiri Forestry Study Program which will collaborate with the Lacuna Project.

 “It is an honor for us to be trusted in helping the implementation of the Lacuna Project, one of RECOFTC’s projects, which in its implementation involves our students who are packaged in the form of MBKM Mandiri,” explained Prof. A. Mujatahid.

On this occasion, Head of the Forestry Study Program, Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, Dr. Ir. A. Mujetahid M., M.P. said that he hoped that this activity could be carried out well and that the Forestry Faculty students involved in this project could help and facilitate the process of implementing the Lacuna project.

One of the Lacuna Project Team, namely, M. Warismi Wafiq, took the opportunity to provide an introduction to the Lacuna Project activity “Advancing Forest and Land Cover Mapping in Indonesia” and the potential for synergy with Hasanuddin University, in this case the Faculty of Forestry.

The Lacuna Project aims to develop open, accurate and easily accessible datasets for machine learning applications in forest cover mapping and sustainable land management. And focuses on land cover change and palm oil mapping in Indonesia, integrating machine learning with community-based data collection and targeting key regions namely Sumatra and Sulawesi.

 “The outcome or impact of this project is to empower local communities, policy makers and researchers with actionable data to reduce deforestation and promote sustainable practices,” explained Wafiq.

Wafiq explained an overview of the MBKM Mandiri internship program which aims to train prospective professionals in geospatial data labeling, land cover mapping, and the application of machine learning in forestry applications.

The learning or training modules provided for MBKM Mandiri participants, Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, are as follows:

1. Introduction to satellite imagery and land cover labeling

2. End-to-end data labeling for AI training

3. Socio-economic survey method for oil palm farmers

4. Basics of AI training with labeled data

5. Field survey methods and accuracy validation
